This temple can be seen on the left side of the outer girivalam path right as one crosses the village of Adi Annamalai.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana';\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1539\" title=\"DSCF5527\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5527-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>The festival took place on Thursday, April 14th which also happens to be the Tamil New Year. Around <a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5537.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1540\" title=\"DSCF5537\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5537-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>sunset, the temple courtyard was already filled with village people who had come to start drawing the Kolams or sacred designs on the ground. Though not much is known about the antecedents of the festival, it seems to be a way of welcoming the new year and also a ritual to propitiate the Goddess so that the summer would not be too hot and that She would send rain from time to time to cool the parched earth and the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana';\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5559.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1541\" title=\"DSCF5559\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5559-300x276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>The festival happenings itself are quite simple. First many <a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5562.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1542\" title=\"DSCF5562\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5562-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>beautiful colourful Kolams are drawn all around the temple and then one hundred thousand clay-oil lamps are placed and lit all over the arena. After this, the Goddes is venerated with a huge abhishekam and then finally brought outside in procession through the streets of the village.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana';\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was really moving to see the rural folk, both men and women, <a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5586.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1544\" title=\"DSCF5586\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5586-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5577.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1543\" title=\"DSCF5577\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5577-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>young and old,\u00a0 all dressed in their festive best and participating so enthusiastically in making the Kolams and arranging and lighting the one hundred thousand oil lamps. Many women devotees\u00a0 were singing hymns in praise of the Goddess asking Her for blessings and cool rain during the hot summer. An elaborate Aarthi puja was <a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5544.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1545\" title=\"DSCF5544\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5544-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>performed after the lighting of the lamps. Later that night, the <a href=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5563.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1547\" title=\"DSCF5563\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/DSCF5563-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Goddess was beautifully decorated and then raised on a pedestal and placed on a wooden palanquin.
