Therefore this holy day is observed and revered by the multitudes. This year, Shivarathri Festival was celebrated in the Arunachelaswar temple on March 14th.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-338\" style=\"margin-left: 1px; margin-right: 7px;\" title=\"Shivaratri-10-16a\" src=\"http:\/\/arunachala-live.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Shivaratri-10-16a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana';\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Shiva, sometimes referred to as the destroyer of the &#8216;Ego&#8217; is worshiped on this night, on the 6th night of the dark Phalgun (Feb or March) every year.<span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana';\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\nOn this auspicious day, devotees observe fast and keep vigil all night. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the &#8216;Tandava&#8217;. Tandava, as performed in the sacred dance-drama of southern India, has vigorous, brisk movements. Performed with joy, the dance is called Ananda Tandava.
